Journal

Q:Suppose your younger brother, nine year old, does not read in English yet, so your mother decided to send him to Hakwon. But 3 months later he ended up feeling that English is simply nightmare. He hates doing phonics workbook and memorizing words. He doesn't want to go to Hakwon anymore. Your mother is anxoius and worried about your brother, so asks you how to help him enjoy reading in English? What would you say?

I have had experience of this situation. My brother is 14years old in this year and he entered a middle school this month. As you know, in Korea students who are in a middle school have private education and spend more time in a private education than in a public education. The older they are, the more their parents have attention and concern about English. My mother also concentrate on his English.
But problem is that korea parents tend to require ablilty they can notice very easily. So, many korea's Hakwons focus on not English itself, but skill of momorize. Especially, these trend is so clear and firm in learing vocabulary is base of english. Obviously, this trend isn't good for English learner. Becuase learing words should not be treat as a separated area, but be dealt with across the four strand. Many program of word would include various activities can reinforce ability of spell.
